The clinical trial NCT03808389 is a study on the effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) on 46 randomized patients with Morbus Parkinson / Parkinson's Disease (PD). The trial aims to investigate the potential of FMT in improving the symptoms of Parkinson's disease by restoring eubiosis in the gut through the transfer of healthy gut microbiota from a screened individual to the patient. Primary outcome measures: Changes in clinical symptoms as scored on the MDS-UPDRS (Movement Disorder Society - Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale) (1).
A single FMT using healthy donor stool produced a modest but statistically significant improvement in objective motor symptoms and colon transit over one year, with a favorable short-term safety profile. Because the study was small, single-center, and slightly under its planned sample size, the authors recommended confirmation in larger multicenter trials (1)
