Macrophages are present in large numbers in adipose tissue, where they are closely associated with adipocytes and the vascular system. Macrophages of distinct developmental origin coexist in the adipose tissue of lean and obese animals.
Monocytes recruited during adipocyte and adipose tissue hypertrophy are mainly found in association with dead/dying adipocytes in “crown-like structures.” Macrophages dynamically adjust their proportion and absolute number of different macrophage subsets.
