Procaspase-9 is the zymogen (inactive precursor) form of caspase-9.
The activation of procaspase-9 is mediated by the apoptosome, a multimeric protein complex. This complex is formed in response to cell death signals that lead to the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol.
