Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) disrupt microbial cell walls (Cotter et al. 2013 Nat Rev Microbiol 11: 95-105), cell membranes (Sohlenkamp & Geiger 2016 FEMS Microbiol Rev 40: 133-159), or target intracellular components (Ghosh et al. 2014 ChemMedChem 9: 2052-2058)

These actions enable Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) to combat a wide range of microbes, including bacteria, fungi (Zhao et al. 2013 Microbiol Res 168: 598-606), and even cancer cells (Luan et al. 2021 Nat Prod Rep 38: 7-17), setting them apart from traditional antibiotics.
