Cytosine permeases are crucial membrane transporters found in both bacteria and yeast. They facilitate the uptake of cytosine, and in yeast, they also transport purines, which are vital for nucleotide metabolism. These permeases are encoded by specific genes: codb gene in Escherichia coli and fcy2 gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The function of cytosine permeases is tightly regulated to align with the cellular metabolic requirements.
