In addition to infections, rare inflammatory cardiomyopathies and chemotherapeutic agents with a direct cardiotoxic or immunomodulating effect can trigger myocarditis (3, 4). Vice versa myocarditis can progress into inflammatory cardiomyopathy due to the chronic activation of myosin heavy chain 6-specific T helper (TH) 1 and TH 17 cells. Despite this understanding, the mechanisms that drive the cardiotoxic programming of heart-specific T cells have remained unclear.
