Knowledge regarding Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) for quiescent Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is scarce (1).
It is a randomized, double-blind treatment trial (Parallel Assignment) to evaluate Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) (fecal suspension of a healthy donor) or placebo (fecal suspension made of patients own feces) in 48 randomized patients with quiescent Ulcerative Colitis (UC) (1).
Maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis
In the study, 13 out of 24 patients (54%) who received FMT reached the main goal, while 10 out of 24 patients (41%) in the placebo group did the same. This difference wasn't statistically significant (P = 0.660) (1).
After 12 months, there was no difference in the number of relapses between the groups in the study. So, our findings suggest that using a single dose of FMT isn't effective for keeping UC in remission (1).
