What Are Intestinal Epithelial Cells and Why Are They Important?

Enterocytes and other intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) form one of the body’s largest exposed surfaces. They integrate signals from the gut microenvironment with physiological information from the immune, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.
