Stop codon reassignment refers to the process where the meaning of a stop codon is altered. In molecular biology, a stop codon is a nucleotide triplet within messenger RNA (mRNA) that signals the termination of protein synthesis. Normally, when a stop codon is encountered during the translation process, it signals the end of protein synthesis. However, in stop codon reassignment, the stop codon is reassigned to code for an amino acid instead of signaling the end of protein synthesis. This can occur due to changes in the translational apparatus, such as alteration or loss of a release factor.
