Clostridioides difficile has a chromosomal region with a Pathogenicity locus (PaLoc). This is where the toxins Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile toxin A (TcdA, CdtA) and Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile toxin B (TcdB) (encoded by tcdA and tcdB) are produced and regulated. The regulation of toxin production (TcdA, TcDB) can be positively regulated by the gene tcdR and negatively regulated by tcdC. The gene that encodes the holin-like protein tcde gene can be involved in releasing toxins from the cell. Non-toxigenic strains lack this region, which is why they are avirulent.
