Significant changes in cell surface sialylation are observed during the activation of murine T lymphocytes. Research by Redelinghuys et al. in 2011 demonstrated that after 24 hours of activation, murine CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes exhibit an increased ratio of N-acetyl-neuraminic acid (NeuAc) to N-glycolyl-neuraminic acid (NeuGc). This alteration in sialylation is a key feature of T lymphocyte activation.
Further studies on cell surface proteins have shown that both tolerogenic cells, such as Immature Dendritic Cells (iDC) and Langerhans Cells, and regulatory T cells are heavily alpha2,6-sialylated. This finding was highlighted in the research conducted by Jenner et al. in 2006, emphasizing the importance of sialylation in immune regulation.
