The Lewis-Y (Le-Y) carbohydrate antigen is a type of molecule found on the surface of cells. It is often present in large amounts in many types of cancer, especially those that start in the lining of organs (epithelial cancers). This antigen is part of a group called the Lewis antigen family, which also includes other molecules like Lewis X and Sialyl Lewis X. The Lewis-Y antigen is known as a type II Lewis antigen because of its unique chemical bonds and the way it is modified with a sugar molecule called fucose.
