Antibiotics can change the balance of microbes, which often leads to antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). Probiotics might help prevent AAD by supporting the gut barrier, restoring the gut microflora, and through other possible mechanisms (1).
A review including 37 articles (3) examined the effects of probiotic supplementation used for the prevention of antibiotic-associated adverse events in children. This study included 32 randomized clinical trials (RCTs), 4 non-randomizet trials, 1 cohort study with a combined total of 5842 children. The analysis incorporated studies conducted up to March 2020.
