According to our hypothesis, genetic heterogeneity arises from a reduction in DNA repair efficiency early in human development. This reduction results in a small minority of cells in normal tissues acquiring cancer-associated genes. These genes remain dormant throughout much of the human lifespan until they are selected for by cancer-promoting tissue microenvironments.
