Schistosoma cercariae are the free-swimming larval stage of schistosome parasites responsible for schistosomiasis in humans and animals. These cercariae emerge from infected freshwater snails (the intermediate host) and are specialized to penetrate human skin, initiating infection by transforming into schistosomula that migrate through the body to mature into adult worms
