Carbohydrate Fermentation Test

The Carbohydrate Fermentation Test is used to assess the ability of bacteria to ferment specific carbohydrates and to differentiate among bacterial groups or species based on their fermentation patterns.

This test involves inoculating a medium containing a single carbohydrate with a pH indicator and an inverted tube to capture any gas produced. The resulting color change and gas production indicate the occurrence of fermentation.

• Positive result: The development of a yellow color in the medium and/or the appearance of gas bubbles in the Durham tube indicate a positive carbohydrate fermentation reaction.
