Systemic antibiotic therapy frequently causes antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD).
Diarrhea is a common adverse event of antibiotic medication. The occurrence of diarrhea is probably due to disruption of the normal gastrointestinal microbiota. Clostridium difficile infection is the most serious form of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD).
In the human gut microbiome, Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile is present, but the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, especially third-generation cephalosporins, has turned it into a major cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
