Imidazole propionate (ImP), which has been found to be associated with atherosclerosis in both mice and humans, can induce atherosclerosis in mice without altering lipid levels. It triggers immune responses and inflammation. The action of ImP is mediated through the imidazoline-1 receptor (I1R) in myeloid cells. Blocking the ImP pathway has been shown to prevent atherosclerosis in mice.
