Sulfosugars

Sulfosugars are sugars that include a sulfonate or sulfate group. In these sugars, sulfur takes the place of or adds to the usual oxygen-containing groups found in standard sugars. Sulfoquinovose (SQ) is a key example. It is a sulfonated glucose analog made by most photosynthetic organisms. SQ serves as the head group of sulfolipids in the cell membranes of plants, algae, and bacteria.
