Prebiotics mediate health benefits such as improvements in bowel function, immune response, glucose and lipid metabolism, bone health, and regulation of appetite and satiety
Aside from the clinical testing of prebiotics in certain diseases, there is a wealth of research to restore successfully homeostasis within the gut microbiota. It is also being investigated whether adding certain prebiotics to formula milk has the same benefits as breastfeeding for infants.
Prebiotics were or are under investigation for:
• Atopic Diseases (incl. allergy, eczema)
• Bacterial infections,
• Cancer,
• Cancer therapy – to improve the intervention and to ameliorate adverse side effects,
• Clostridium difficile infection,
• Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease,
• Metabolic Syndrome and related disorders such as Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), Type 2 diabetes, Obesity, Pre-diabetic
• Neurological Disorders
• Others.
The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) conclusions highlighted that prebiotics play an integral role in health status prophylactically and therapeutically Cunningham et al., 2021
