Vemurafenib is a small molecule that can be taken orally and acts as an inhibitor of the oncogenic V600 BRAF serine-threonine kinase. When mutations occur in the BRAF gene, they replace the valine at the 600th amino acid position, leading to the constant activation of BRAF proteins. This activation drives cell proliferation even when growth factors are not present.
