Tumors in the omentum of microbe-rich mice grow unhindered due to immunosuppressive Tregs. Proteobacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) in microbe-rich mice consume arginine, reducing serum arginine levels. This promotes Treg suppression and prevents tumor clearance.
In contrast, omental tumors in germ-free mice treated with neomycin or mice colonized with altered Schaedler flora are spontaneously eliminated by CD8+ T cells. These mice lack proteobacteria.
