Phenylacetylglutamine is a microbial metabolite, but more precisely it's a host-microbiome co-metabolite (dual-origin), not a purely bacterial product, since it requires a mandatory host conjugation step to form. Dietary phenylalanine (from egg, meat, dairy, etc.) is transformed by gut bacteria into phenylacetic acid (PAA) - this microbial step is catalyzed by bacterial enzymes phenylpyruvate ferredoxin-oxidoreductase (PPFOR) and phenylpyruvate decarboxylase (PPDC).
