Surfactant Protein D (SP-D) is a collectin and C-type lectin found predominantly in the lungs, where it plays critical roles in surfactant homeostasis and the innate immune response, especially in mucosal immunity. SP-D binds to pathogens through its carbohydrate recognition domain, agglutinates bacteria, and is involved in the clearance of a broad range of microorganisms including viruses, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi, thereby limiting excessive inflammation and tissue damage
