Gut microbiota & Lovastatin

Gut microbiota can influence the metabolism and efficacy of lovastatin, a lipid-lowering drug. Research has shown that the gut microbiota is involved in the metabolism of lovastatin to its active form. A study demonstrated that the plasma concentration of the active metabolite of lovastatin was significantly lower when lovastatin was administered with certain antibiotics, indicating a potential interaction mediated by the gut microbiota

Additionally, the intake of probiotics was found to slow the inflammatory reaction of the liver caused by lovastatin, suggesting a potential role for probiotics in mitigating the adverse effects of lovastatin on the liver
