In mammals, serotonin (5-HT) is released by multiple subtypes of serotonergic neurons located in the raphe nuclei (1, 2, 3, 4). These serotonergic subtypes have distinct and widespread projections to distant brain regions (5). Recordings from this neuronal population show diverse activity patterns rather than a single uniform response profile (3, 6, 7, 8, 9). These activity patterns have been linked to rewarding stimuli such as food and to higher-order cognitive processes.
The diversity in activity likely reflects that different serotonergic neurons receive different inputs (10, 11, 12, 13). In humans, altered serotonin levels are associated with changes in impulsivity and decision-making (14, 15, 16)
