The translocation of bacteria and bacterial products into the bloodstream is a significant factor in the development of alcoholic liver disease. Patients with this condition often experience intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
We employed a mouse model, administering continuous intragastric feeding of either alcohol or an isocaloric diet. Our findings indicated that bacterial translocation occurred before any observable changes in the microbiome. Initially, we assessed quantitative changes in the intestinal microflora using conventional culture techniques in both the small and large intestines.
