Cysteine Cathepsins

Cysteine cathepsins are a family of proteolytic enzymes that play critical roles in various physiological and pathological processes. They are primarily used for protein breakdown in the lysosomes. However, their activity extends beyond lysosomal degradation and contributes to processes such as antigen presentation, cell death, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix degradation, and more.
