Functions of recently transferred genes are associated with host lifestyle
Groussin et al. 2021
Humans in several geographic regions have historically consumed seaweeds in forms such as sushi, introducing novel dietary fiber polysaccharides to the gut. Pudlo, Pereira et al. show that various mobile DNA elements have participated in transferring genes from marine bacteria, enabling gut bacteria to digest seaweed polysaccharides.
More recently, regional populations have consumed edible macroalgae seeweeds containing unique polysaccharides.
