Like statins, bempedoic acid inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis in the hepatocytes. The resulting overexpression of LDL receptors with a statin lowers LDL-C by an additional 15%. In statin-intolerant individuals, when combined with ezetimibe vs. ezetimibe alone, it lowers LDL-C by an extra 23%. Tolerability appears moderate. Compared to placebo, there are significantly more discontinuations of therapy due to side effects. There is also an increased potential for interaction with other medications
