Flucytosine is a prodrug converted to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in Escherichia coli (E. coli) via the cytosine deaminase enzyme (encoded by codA) and Cytosine permease (codB). The cytosine deaminase gene is transferred from Escherichia coli (E. coli) into human colon carcinoma. It makes tumors sensitive to 5-fluorocytosine.
