Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for type 2 diabetes and is associated with changes in gut metabolites
The Non-Randomized, clinical basic science trial NCT02207777 evaluated the effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery versus low-calorie diet-induced weight loss on metabolic function in 22 patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Both groups experienced similar improvements in hepatic insulin sensitivity, muscle insulin sensitivity, beta-cell function, and 24-hour plasma glucose and insulin profiles after approximately 18% weight loss.
