Ulimorelin as a small molecule acts as a ghrelin agonist and prokinetic agent. It worked in animal models of gastroparesis and delayed transit. But, it failed in clinical trials for postoperative ileus (POI). This condition affects colonic motility.

Gastric emptying was measured by scintigraphy. This was done in healthy adults. Single doses ranged from 600-1200 µg kg-1. Multiple doses were 80-600 µg kg-1 every 8 hours for 7 days. Colonic motility was assessed by 7-region scintigraphic analysis. This was at a dose of 600 µg kg-1 for 2 days.
