Cryptosporidium tyzzeri was unexpectedly discovered when mice lacking conventional type 1 dendritic cells (cDC1) developed cryptosporidiosis. In wild-type mice, Cryptosporidium tyzzeri was passed down without causing negative health effects. However, Cryptosporidium tyzzeri induced significant changes in the intestinal immune system, including the induction of an IFN-gamma-producing Th1 response.
