What effect does dysbiosis have on Enterobacteriaceae?
Enterobacteriaceae / Enterobacteria have the potential for overgrowth and intestinal domination during dysbiosis (1).
What are the effects of the increased abundance of Enterobacteriaceae?
A wide range of human diseases such as
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) (2, 3, 4, 5),
- Colorectal Cancer (CRC) (6, 7),
- Necrotizing enterocolitis (8),
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) (9, 10),
- Adiposity / obesity (11, 12)
are associated with a severe disruption of the balanced gut microbial ecosystem, often characterized by an expansion of facultative anaerobic Enterobacteriaceae (13).
What mechanism underlies the worsening of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) by Enterobacteriaceae?
Enterobacteriaceae exacerbates IBD by promoting inflammation through lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated immune activation. LPS activates CD284 (Toll-Like Receptor 4 (TLR-4)) / MYD88 / NFKB signaling pathway, driving IL-17 and tissue damage (1).
