Gene transfer agents (GTAs) are like phages. Some bacteria and archaea make them. They package small, random bits of the cell's genome. Then, they deliver these bits to other cells. This process helps with horizontal gene transfer. GTAs are not like true bacteriophages. They don't have enough DNA to make the full GTA machinery. So, a GTA particle can't be a self-propagating virus.
