Onken and Driscoll (Onken & Driscoll 2010 PLoS One 5(1): e8758) reported that metformin increased median survival of C. elegans from 15 to 21 days (40% increase; metformin 50 mM). Similar results were found by Cabreiro et al. (Cabreiro et al. 2013 Cell 153(1): 228-239), De Haes et al. (De Haes et al. 2014 Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 111(24): E2501-2509), Wu et al. (Wu et al. 2016 Cell 167(7): 1705-1718), and Chen et al. (Chen et al. 2017 Elife 6: e31268). However, metformin did not increase the lifespan of the fly Drosophila melanogaster (Slack et al. 2012 PLoS One 7(10): e47699)
