EmrE is a small multidrug transporter from Escherichia coli that exports toxic cationic compounds in exchange for protons, contributing to bacterial multidrug resistance. It is a minimal, 4-transmembrane-helix membrane protein that functions as a homo‑dimer and has become a key model for secondary active transport and proton‑coupled antiport.
