The small protein Rip1 helps bacteria by detecting certain parts of the phage that are important for the virus to grow. When Rip1 detects these parts, it forms holes in the bacterial membrane, stopping the virus from assembling and causing the bacteria to die early. Rip1 is found in many types of bacteria and is effective against different phages.
