The role of Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is not clear.
NAFLD inhibitory mechanisms
The role of SCFAs in the context of NAFLD is not yet clear. Their positive influence on barrier integrity and thus the reduction of inflammatory processes is essential. SCFAs upregulate the expression of MUC-related genes in goblet cells, strengthening the mucosa through increased production and secretion of mucins. In addition, genes responsible for the synthesis of AMPs are upregulated by SCFAs in Paneth cells. An increased AMP secretion is essential for intestinal antibacterial defense
