Pirfenidone & Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Pirfenidone is approved by both the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the EMA (European Medicines Agency) for the treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

The clinical efficacy was demonstrated in several studies. It was first shown in Japan (Taniguchi et al. 2010 Eur Respir J 35: 821) and later in two larger multinational double-blind Phase III studies, namely the CAPACITY studies and the ASCEND study (Noble et al. 2011 Lancet 377: 1760; King Jr et al. 2014 N Engl J Med 370: 2083)
