The European MetaHIT Project (Metagenomics of the Human Intestinal Tract) was a large EU-funded consortium that systematically characterized the human gut microbiome using high-throughput metagenomic sequencing. The project aimed to catalogue genes and microbial species in the human intestinal tract and to relate microbiome composition to health and disease, especially obesity and inflammatory bowel disease (1, 2). It focused on European cohorts and became a counterpart and complement to the US Human Microbiome Project, enabling cross-Atlantic comparisons of gut microbiota (2, 3).
