The term HipA most commonly refers to a bacterial protein kinase involved in antibiotic tolerance and Antibiotic persistence, particularly in Escherichia coli and related bacteria. It the toxin component of the HipBA (HipB + HipA) toxin-antitoxin. HipA is a serine/threonine kinase that, when activated, phosphorylates glutamyl-tRNA synthetase, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis, induction of dormancy, and thus increased tolerance to antibiotics (persistence)
