Rifaximin is in 2004 FDA-approved for the treatment of traveller’s diarrhea (TD) caused by non-invasive diarrheagenic Escherichia coli, but it is not approved by the EMA for TD. The indication specifically states treatment of traveller’s diarrhea excluding cases with bloody stools or fever, which may signal invasive pathogens such as Shigella, Salmonella, or Campylobacter. The recommended regimen is 200 mg three times daily for 3 days in adults.
